Litz Wire Windings for Medical High-Voltage Applications

PACK LitzWire supported a medical technology manufacturer in developing precisely adapted HF litz wires for MRI transformers and coils that function reliably even under extreme operating conditions and meet the highest safety standards.

The Challenge

For a medical technology customer, PACK LitzWire worked on optimizing transformer and coil windings in MRI devices. The challenge was to safely insulate very high voltages, efficiently dissipate heat, and meet the strict safety and EMC requirements of the industry. Conventional copper wires were not sufficient for this: High currents and the strong magnetic fields of the MRI system quickly led to hotspots or voltage overloads at critical points.

Lösungsstrategie

PACK LitzWire therefore recommended the use of special HF litz wires (RUPALIT®) with high-grade insulating varnish, which distribute the current evenly over many fine individual wires and effectively prevent hotspots. The combination of fine-stranded litz wire and a high number of individual wires (over 3,500 individual wires) ensured that the windings remained thermally stable and met the strict EMC and safety requirements.

Ergebnis

The result was a coil that functioned reliably even under extreme operating conditions, complied with the highest safety standards, and at the same time efficiently dissipated heat – a decisive contribution to the performance and safety of MRI devices.
